The Wild World of Working from Home: Tips for Staying Focused and Sane

Working from home is WILD.

On one hand—you’re in the comfort of your own home.

On the other hand—you’re battling a constant barrage of distractions.

Yet you’re the captain of your ship (er…office)… free to run errands midday and savor that heavenly commute from your bedroom to your home office.

It CAN get a tad lonely, but hey—your lunch breaks are legendary hangouts with your furry friend (or just by yourself… that’s cool too).

And if you’re working from home with a toddler, you know that your tiny human continues to add to that wildness 😅

But I’ve been spending this season learning to embrace it… and reminding myself that I GET to do this.

So, how do you tame the distractions and maintain your sanity in this untamed territory? Here are some of my best tips:

1. Design Your Den of Focus

In the wilderness of distractions, your secret weapon is a dedicated workspace.

My dedicated space? It has toddler crayons and coloring books shoved in one corner and the other half of the room is my make-shift home gym.

No matter what… have a dedicated space.

So whether it's a cozy corner or a swanky office, having your own sanctuary is a game-changer.

Bonus points if your haven has a door with a lock.

2. Take Breaks, Breathe in Fresh Air

Don't be a hermit!

Stepping outside can be like a breath of fresh air (literally).

Incorporate short breaks throughout your day.

Have lunch on your porch. Take a stroll through your amateur garden. Go on a 20-minute walk.

Five minutes of reconnection with the outside world can do wonders.

3. Know When to Surrender

Sometimes, you've got to wave that white flag. When chaos reigns, or a construction symphony takes center stage in your bathroom (ahem…bathroom renovations), it's time to embrace it.

Some battles simply aren't worth fighting, and that's perfectly fine.

4. Tame the Jungle with the Pomodoro Technique

For years, I've sworn by the Pomodoro method – it's like a tranquilizer dart for distractions.

Here's the drill: Set a timer for 25 minutes and work like a focused ninja during that time.

No checking emails, no spontaneous Amazon shopping sprees.

Just work.

Then, reward yourself with a 5-minute break.

Repeat this process, and you'll be amazed at how much you conquer.

5. The Power of Rituals

Creating a daily routine is a survival strategy in the home-based wilderness.

Start your day with a familiar ritual —a cup of coffee, a morning walk, or a few moments of journaling.

And ending your workday with a routine signals your brain that it's time to switch gears.

6. Accountability Partners

Feeling isolated working from home? Find an accountability partner.

It could be a colleague, friend, or your significant other.

But sharing your goals and progress with someone can keep you on track.

(Anyone else find themselves sending 10-minute voice texts because you haven’t spoken to anyone all day? Just me?)

7. Dress the Part

While pajamas are tempting, dressing as if you're going to the office can put you in a productive mindset. It's a subtle way to signal to yourself that it's work time, not lounge time.

8. Customize Your Work Environment

Make your workspace your own.

Add some plants, artwork that inspires you, and window treatments you love.

Framed pics of loved ones, a fun rug, and a desk lamp are a few more ideas.

Personal touches can transform your workspace from a dull office into a motivational hub.

9. Practice Mindfulness

Working from home can definitely lead to stress. It’s hard to leave work behind.

So take a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness or deep breathing exercises. It's a great way to reduce stress and improve focus.

10. Celebrate Small Wins

In the sea of daily tasks, it's easy to overlook your victories. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. It's a reminder that you're making progress.

So, there you have it – some tips to thriving in the wild world of working from home. Embrace the distractions, cherish the freedom, and remember that you're the king or queen of your remote jungle.
